Health Literacy

The National Action Plan to Improve Health Literacy, released by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on May 27, 2010, is focused on making health information and services easier to understand and use. It is directed at improving the health literacy of our nation by engaging organizations, professionals, policymakers, communities, individuals and families.

It is important to make health information easier to understand. Millions of people in the United States have difficulty understanding and effectively following directions, for example, on prescription drug labels or understanding insurance forms. This can lead to more serious health complications. Studies show that low health literacy can lead to more emergency room visits and make it more difficult to manage chronic diseases.

Health literacy gives us the ability to make good health decisions for ourselves and our families.
